Enough with the Celebrity Issue - WE NEED SUBSTANCE

Someone earlier wrote a diary announcing Obama's response to McCain's "celebrity" ads. As a Democrat, Obama's ad does nothing for me. Are we, The People, that stupid to believe that presidential candidates being too much of a celebrity is an issue? I hope not, but I suspect it's true. I'm just disappointed that Obama is continuing to feed the fire. Personally, I'd rather see and hear Obama ads with him actually saying something real. After every Obama speech or ad I've ever seen, I'm left feeling empty. It's the same feeling I get after I've consumed a calorie-free food or beverage.

Obama should be showcasing his achievements. He should be telling us about the bills he's authored while in the Senate. By the way, I don't care about bills he has simply endorsed. I want to know what he's created. He could tell us about some of his votes, like how he voted time and again for Iraq war funding, and let's not forget FISA.

He says he wants to change the way things are done in Washington, yet he hasn't even completed a full term. Unfortunately, Obama's limited experience disqualifies him for advocating that kind of change. Every candidate makes this kind of promise, and we've seen them do nothing once elected.

Whatever he says or does, enough with the celebrity issue. We need substance. I am a Clinton supporter, but I am now an Obama supporter who sees his flaws. So, here's a challenge for all the long-term Obama supporters. Instead of slamming me, calling me names, or otherwise insulting me, tell us all exactly what is that Obama has done.

How's the weather out there? (none / 0)

The weather here in WA state continues to be just amazing, my girlfriend took a hike up to a lake in the Cascades, it was just incredible.

I am stuck at work, but at least, it's a wonderful sunny day!

Down here in Portland also.  Beautiful day.

P.S. 350mph Maglev is an excellent idea.  Think that Mr. Allen will spring for it.

Well, he is running out of Jimi Hendrix mementos to buy...

He turned part of the EMP into a Sci-Fi museum.

Last project was, he built his own small trolly line, which ran from a large area he bought uptown (condos, high-end offices) to the downtown corridor.

It's on South Lake Union, and they announced the name, had posters, a big opening ceremony.

Ready for the name.

South Lake Union Trolley.

That's right, they didn't check the initials before somebody told them the motto

RIDE THE SLUT

Was not exactly great marketing.

I think after that, Paul owes us a MAGLEV to Portland.

why don't you do your own research instead of demanding others spoon-feed you?

Everytime I answer this question (none / 0)

it's refuted by someone saying it isn't substance enough, so I'll do it one more time with the obvious answer you'll give me;

Here's what the New York Times said;

Mr. Obama helped deliver what is said to have been the first significant campaign finance reform law in Illinois in 25 years. He brought law enforcement groups around to back legislation requiring that homicide interrogations be taped and helped bring about passage of the state's first racial-profiling law. He was a chief sponsor of a law enhancing tax credits for the working poor, played a central role in negotiations over welfare reform and successfully pushed for increasing child care subsidies.

Now you'll come back with some comment about how the source is unreliable and something about how people won't notice that type of stuff.

He beat the Clintons, for starters.

No easy task, my dear.

oh god. (2.00 / 1)

contentious diary and even more comment....  missliberties, do you have much to say that does not include the clintons?

that said - i dont necessarily agree with most of the comments made about obama in this diary.  but - yes, the dems need to change the topic fast.  the more the election becomes a referendum on obama, rather than the issue the more likely it is to lose.

first step in branding, keep repeating your message.  gop is just getting started.

It's VERY easy  (my dear) when you have the most favorable press coverage in history.  It's easy to beat anyone under those circumstances.

So that's the excuse of the day? Allow me to say that Clinton would fire you as an excuse maker if you did work for her. At least some of her lunatic fringe are at least creative with their excuses. You're just a joke.

Re: What has Obama done..... (2.00 / 1)

The Obama crowd just can't stand the truth--ie The Center for Media research did an exhaustive study from summer 2007 until February 5, 2008 Super tuesday).  Barack Obama received the highest favorable coverage of any primary candidate in history 83% while Hillary clinton only had 53%, Bill Clinton received only 23% favorable coverage.  The MEDIA (which netroots people has so long disparaged  until now) took Barack Obama's election as their cause--and i defy anyone to tell me that Chris Matthews and Tim Russert weren't essentially waging a daily Obama campaign. To say nothing of Andrea Mitchell, Shuster, Olbermann, Johnathon Capehart, Jonathon Alter, and Jack Cafferty who once again I need to repeat his classic (non-partisan) line delivered on Jan 4th 2008 on CNN, "Barack Obama's victory speech last night was unbelievably brilliant, finally we have someone who can help us take our country back." Uh, isn't that an endorsement?  Ah, but I'm just a bitter Clinton supporter. Incidentally according to the Rasmussenn Reports survey Obama is only getting 77% of registered Dems. So I guess the Ye Olde Puma Movement isn't as weak as you think it is.

how about that?

I'll tell you Chris Matthews and the rest weren't essentially waging a daily Obama campaign, they were and still are waging a daily McCain campaign.

Re: What has Obama done..... (none / 0)

Just b/c they exposed Hillary's lies about Obama does not make them biased. It makes them report that lies are lies. And Hillary, in her desperation, told MANY lies about Obama during the campaign.

You act like they all ignored Reverend Wright and the other PR problems Obama had.

Pathetic! Wrong! Misguided! Lunacy! Yep, you're a PUMA Clintonite all right.

Re: What has Obama done..... (none / 0)

Ah, what lies did she tell about Barack Obama? Fox News was reporting on the good Reverand Wright long before the Iowa caucuses-last October and yet the chattering class of Washington insiders ddin't cover it.  Wright only came to the forefront AFTER Obama had all but secured the nomination.  Chris Matthews wants McCain?  Are you serious? Oh yeah his show is just loaded with McCain supporters. Then there was the famous Tim Russert October 30 (drivers licenses) debate on Obama's home away from home, MSNBC, where 24 of 52 questions by the esteemed late lamented Mr. Russert and Mr. Williams mentioned the Clintons in the body of the question.  How's that for piling on?  At the end of the "debate" Mr Obmaa wasn't asked about his past drug use, his ties to a domestic terrorist, his affiliations with (shall we say "controversial" church)--no HE WAS ASKED what he was going to be for Halloween!!! Then he was asked by the smiling Mr. Russert about space travel and cosmic consciousness--softballs a coming.  It was actually a miracle that Hillary managed to win the popularvote in the first place.  Now Mr Obama could do the right thing as she would have done with him and offered her second spot on the ticket (as has been done numerous times in the past) but oh no, the DailyKos, MSNBC crowd won't hear of it.  This is after Donna Brazille said she would quit the party if the supers "overturned" the will of the people ie. didn't vote for her beloved Obama.  So I guess we are all supposed to shut up and pretend that all of this didn't happen. That the Obama loving media didn't exist--that NO other candidate who won the popular vote was spoken about in such derogatory terms as HRC was and MANY others (Reagan, J Jackson, Scoop Jackson, Ted Kennedy, Bush senior) all had their names placed in nomination when they all had no cjance of gettin gthe nomination.  Ah, but HRC is "different".  She must have  a "stake driven in her heart", be "run over by a flatbed truck", suffer the fate of Glenn Close or Norma Desmond, ie. get out of the way you pesky ambitious woman.

Re: What has Obama done..... (none / 0)

I agree I like how the media buried the Wright story and  I also like how they did not loop the sound byte every day for weeks

I also like the favorable press coverage
Obama got like "he has a white working class problem" or "why isn't Obama farther ahead in the polls"

wait a sec they did not bury the Wright story ???? but I thought..... hmmmm

President-elect Barack Obama spent the day thanking the people who helped him win the election. Obama's first phone call was to Sarah Palin.

Huh. (none / 0)

You say that as if Obama came up with the "celebrity" angle himself and pushed it independantly of his opponent.

Obama's trying to work the issues and tout his accomplishments, but he does need to respond to McCain's BS attacks, lest he suffer the same fate as John Kerry.

Obama has given you (none / 0)

plenty of substance. 2004 showed what happened when you don't respond to bullshit attacks. Obama is doing exactly what he should be doing.

he's been plenty substantive. If your bias towards hillary Clinton does not allow you to see that, then that is your fault, not Obama's.

How About just enough! (none / 0)

You know TexasDem, if you are as you say you are - now supporting Obama, no offense I'm a bit suspect. Then you should know the the answers to your own question. Even if you are really not for him all this was hashed  and re-hashed out during the primary. So either you weren't paying attention or you have other motives.

Next nobody  cares any longer about what Obama did, they now   want to know what he is going to do and can he get it done.

Re: Enough with PUNY (none / 0)

It is very simple...
You can remain passive believing your vote is enough.
You can realize that defeating McCain is important enough to contribute your personal time and effort to your local Obama campaign...

or hey it is simple
truly believe McCain's anti-choice record
is not motivation enough for you..

Fuck PUNY...I mean PUMA
